8/8/2007"Failed to Access IIS Metabase" or "The process account used to run ASP.NET must have read access to the IIS metabase (e.g. IIS://servername/W3SVC)" This typically occurs when IIS is installed after the .NET framework, often on XP development systems.
To solve this problem (in most cases), you can do the following:
- Using Add/Remove Programs, select the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, click on "Change/Remove" then select "Repair"
- Using the aspnet_regiis application (under \Windows\Microsoft .NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 directory), try to uninstall then reinstall the framework extensions (first using the -u, then the -i options).
- Restart your system, then verify your IIS configuration for ASP .NET.

Thought others might like to know. 8/2/2007Does the error message you are getting look like this:
user@domain.com on mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm
You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator.
<mail.domain.com #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for user@domain.com>
If so read this post.
Symptoms:
I have had this happen to me 4 times, two different domians, 4 seperate occasions. lets call them Domain A and Domain B. I have executives of Domain A using my server so they can ActiveSync their phones. They use my servers email addresses user@mydomain.com. Occasionally, twice so far, when sending messages to Domain A, their employees, the get the 550 error message. When it happens it happens for a while 4 - 6 hours, then dissapears. Yesterday, it happened. I called the hosting company for their domain to discuss the error we sent probably 20 test messages and check each others logs and compared notes. While this is happening, I also sent messages from hotmail, my school email address, my home email server (exchange), and my work email (exchange). My home and work got the same error while my school and hotmail went through. We saw all of this in the log. The idea was that maybe it was a DNS config issue, we notices that the mx records for Domain A were pointing to mail.isp.com instead of mail.domaina.com. We are not sure and are goign to change the dns and test but are going to wait until the weekend.
At work I am runnign the following:
Exchange 2003 Ent Server on 1 box
GFI Mail Security acting as a mail relay (Gateway)
All mail flows through the gateway and depending on the emails domain is sent to exchange. This reduces load on our exchange server and provides a more secure perimeter given the Gateway is not attached to the domain.
Resolution:
In IIS SMTP I added a domain "Domain A" and set it to forward to a smart host, "mail.isp.com" all mail started working to that domain.
This is not a stable way to solve the problem but now that email is back up, we are goig to play with DNS settings to see what might be the problem. 6/26/2007
I am setting up Mobile Active Sync for one of my customers. Most of you might know this, but you will get the 85010014 error if you have forms based authentication turned on. Also, you must have a certified, non local or free, SSL cert in order to use SSL. I have godaddy on one of my servers and it doesn't work with a lot of phones.
If you need more details, request using comments.

The scanost.exe did not work. I did however export his files, and delete / recreate his mailbox and he was able to sync emails again.
Person #4 I am going to try to export his mailbox using the server, delete / recreate and then reimport using the server. This will obviously save a great deal of time because I won't have to bother remote contolling his pc and I won't e at the mercy of his cable or dsl connection to reupload his 600 MB mailbox.
Update: The server side didn't work either.
Conclusion:
After playing with 5 peoples exchange with Motorola Q's trying to sync who got 86000108 error code I have discovered the following:
1. backup the profile to pst
a. open outlook, connect to exchange
b. file > import/export
c. export to a file
d. export to a pst
c. select the mailbox, be sure to select the (include subfolders)
d. close outlook
2. delete the outlook profile
a. go to control panel > mail
b. click profile
c. click the exchange profile
d. select delete
3. delete the exchange profile on the server
go to AD users and computers
select user
right click > exchange tasks
delete exchange mailbox
4. recreate exchnage mailbox
5. sync the phone
6. send a test message
as long as all worked ok
7. open outlook
8. reconnect to exchange
9. import pst
10. resync phone
you should be done.

Whenever I find a cool app or anything else that is free, I will discuss it and then either let you download it from my inventory or provide you to a link of where to get it. Please leave comments and let me know if you have something you want me to evaluate.
Summary:
I have about 25 people using my MS Exchange 2003 server. I recently added a small group of 10 people to our server who wanted to buy Moto Q's and sync with our server. So far 3 of the 4 people that I have connected don't work. This is what I have found. On these 3 people a keep getting the same error message 86000108. All my web research says that its an SSL isuue but I am not using SSL for my phones to sync. Some say its corrupt files.
Research:
Microsoft Hotfixes (2): I will post the actual hotfixes I applied but they are in reference to the 86000108 error code that I am getting. Neither of the hotfixes worked for me. (If you want these without calling microsoft email me.)
Mailbox Cleanup Tools: People says its corrupt data, I have run the mailbox clean, removed all the messages in on users inbox to a PST file, and no of this seemed to work. I can get the contacts, calendar, and tasks to sync but not the email.
Rebooting: I have even rebooted my server, wiped the phones, connected using active sync desktop, connected using active sync via the phones interface.
Reinstalling Active Sync
To date I have tried the above. I started looking at what similarities are in the systems that are having problems and tried to think back to when I set them up on exchange. Everyone that is having problems was using Microsoft Outlook prior to to using my exchange and I imported their PST files. One of my thoughts is that during the import process email tags (used in outlook for management for Business Contact Manager) are causing issues. What I am going to do is export a user's folder to a PST, run the scanpst.exe program to make sure its clean, delete the users mailbox from exchange, and then import one foder at a time, the contacts, calendar, tasks, and then old emails. I will let you know how it works.
5/24/07 - Update on Export Process. Okay, on person #1, computer was a pop account on outlook 2003 runn BCM, we then imported her profile into our exchange server. When she bought her Moto Q, she got the 86000108 error code. I exported her profile back to a PST, removed BCM, deleted her local profile, deleted her exchange mailbox, recreated the exchange mailbox, recreated her profile. I then had her sync her phone and it worked. She was receiving messages, furthermore, the calendar and contacts on her phone updated the server. I then imported her emails, notes, tasks from her pst file after running scanpst.exe. She is slap happy.
Person #2 had the exact same sitsuation as person #1, the process worked for him as well.
Person #3 was similar in that he had a previous outlook profile but was not using BCM. I know that deleting the exchnage and local prfiles work. for him, I am going to try a simpler proceedure to see if it works. I am going to tell his system to work offile and then run scanost.exe. I won't know if this works until tomorrow when I can call him and ask him to sync his Moto Q again. Scanost.exe is so far a real nice tool, check out this link to Microsoft's site:

My brother comes to me the other dayand tells me that all his graphics design friends have MAC OS X and he wants a MAC computer also. I thought about it for a few minutes and told him, blindly, that Windows and MAC were the same. The only difference was that Windows allowed the operator to have almost full control over their PC where a MAC was linited to what Apple says you can do, therefore, MAC computers run more stable than Windows computers.
I have done more research and one article I read says that MAC OSX can when benchmarked on Adobe Photoshop ran 47% faster than a Windows based machine. I thought, how can this be. They are both dual core, they both use DDR2 RAM, they both have 800 ro 1066 FSB. And I thought, OS control. The MAC OS must offer a better form of manageing reseources design for performance. I know that if you keep a windows install clean, like a MAC does. It runs increadibly fast. I want to build an app that will only allow approved applications on the computer. I think Windows Vista is getting close tothis with their Limited Admin controls. That is a start. As I get further along in this project, I will let you know what I discover.
Everyone loves free software. I don't know anyone who doesn't. Microsoft, in a bold move, is releasing express versions of there software.
At the beggining of the year they released Microsoft Visual Studio Express, a free Visual Basic, Visual C++, and Web Designer. This software is completely free with no stings attached. I did notice that it is missing some advanced editing tools, but the software is feature rich and gets the job done.
The newest, released last week, item is Microsoft Accounting Express 2007. It offers any small or home based service business the ability to go from paper, or excel, based accounting to a free auditable, trackable, software. I setup my fiance with this software to track her nanny service, it is perfect. It even seemlessly integrates with Outlook BCM.
Other reseaources:
More to come as I learn more.
